Tartans
Making the Scottish Tradition Fashionable: Tartans
Ever since the Scottish tradition started, the kilt outfits has been a part of it, and integral part. The tradition has been hence carried down by the folks there and is very well blended with today’s fashion era. Today, men, boys, and girls; all choose to wear the kilt outfits.
In the early days, the kilt outfits was the royal patronage and they alone were allowed to wear it, and no commoner. It gradually became then the clothes for the highland Scotland people, and then now, everyone wears the tartans as and when they wish, although there still is an apprehensive look on the faces of people who haven’t accepted to be little more unconventional, rather liberal towards the wearing tartan tradition. Today, a common man can wear a tartan.
The Dress Act, 1746, had definitely curtailed the tartan but then like resurrecting from nowhere, it regained popularity when Sir Walter Scott and King George IV visited Edinburgh and encouraged the folks there to not let go off this tradition of theirs. Every man must have his own tartan, is what Sir Walter Scott had stated, hence making the usage of the tartan more accessible, more available to the people there. Even the Victorian era plays a great role in making the tartan so popular. The tradition of each clan, or each family having his own tartan pattern was popularized, and hence the clans have a uniquely identifiable tartan for themselves. The clan of the child is based on whether he takes his father’s surname or his mother’s surname. The former of course then belongs to the father’s clan and in the other case; the child belongs to the mother’s clan. According to the clan he belongs to, he is allowed the clan tartan.
Men and boys wear the tartan to formal as well as casual events. It is a multipurpose piece of clothing, which not only looks good when paired up with a short jacket but can also be worn with other top clothing, and can be teamed up with accessories. High school boys wear the tartans as a school uniforms sometimes. The kilt skirts has gained immense popularity amongst the young girls as well as the school going little girls, as it is becoming more and more fashionable, along with being traditional. The good thing in this remains that the tradition is still intact and the people do not have to look old school when dressed in their traditional outfit. The men can wear the kilt outfit to a hunting event or a dinner party and not look out of the place.
